A mass shooting in Newark on Saturday evening killed a 21-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy, while wounding an 11-year-old and two men, ages 19 and 60.
The gunman opened fire on Chancellor Avenue, leaving at least 17 evidence markers at the scene, and authorities are actively investigating.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka called the shooting “depraved and senseless” and urged the perpetrator to surrender.
Police and detectives combed the residential area for evidence, examining items including a jacket found on the ground, the New York Post has reported.
While Newark has seen a 13% rise in violent crime in the year leading up to May 2024, recent data from January through October 2025 show decreases in aggravated assaults, robberies, and homicides.
