A burst pipe at the Louvre in Paris last week caused flooding that damaged 300 to 400 works in the museum’s Egyptian antiquities library, including books and periodicals used by researchers.
Staff are working to dry and preserve the affected items, some of which date back to the 19th century.
The damaged area is scheduled for a major ventilation and heating system renovation starting in September.
This incident comes shortly after a high-profile jewelry heist in October, in which thieves stole eight of France’s crown jewels valued at around €88 million, NBC News has reported.
Several suspects, including four men and one woman, have been arrested and charged in connection with the robbery.
