Congress faces uncertainty over a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill expected to be voted on this week, threatening efforts to prevent a government shutdown by Jan. 30.
Progressive Democrats argue the bill lacks meaningful reforms to curb ICE confrontations with the public, while some Republicans say it doesn’t fully support President Trump’s immigration priorities.
The bill includes body cameras for ICE officers, new training requirements, largely flat funding, and cuts to some removal operations, but conservatives have raised concerns about restrictions on data sharing for unaccompanied minors.
With a slim Republican margin due to recent departures, amendments are expected to address party concerns, while the Congressional Progressive Caucus has vowed to oppose the measure without stronger ICE safeguards, Fox News has reported.
The House is scheduled to vote on the DHS bill on Thursday, amid ongoing debates over policy and funding priorities.
