Man pleads guilty in North Carolina mass shooting that killed 5

An 18-year-old, Austin David Thompson, pleaded guilty to murder and other charges for a 2022 mass shooting in Raleigh, North Carolina, that killed five people, including his older brother and a police officer.

Thompson, who was 15 at the time, admitted to five counts of first-degree murder along with attempted murder and assault charges, avoiding a trial that was set to begin soon.

Prosecutors said he shot and stabbed his brother at home, then killed neighbors and victims on a nearby trail before being arrested after a lengthy standoff with police.

Because of his age at the time of the crimes, Thompson cannot face the death penalty but could receive life in prison, with parole eligibility possible after decades, CBS News has reported.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Feb. 2, and his attorneys said a brain injury has left him unable to explain his motive.
