Macron warns Europe faces political and economic crisis

French President Emmanuel Macron warned Tuesday that Europe faces a severe political and economic crisis, risking being “swept aside” by competition from the U.S. and China.

Speaking ahead of an EU leaders’ meeting, he called the situation a “profound shock” and urged the bloc to use it as a “Greenland moment” to push economic reforms and reduce reliance on external powers.

Macron criticized reliance on the U.S., citing potential threats like tariffs linked to Europe’s Digital Services Act, and warned against being lulled into a false sense of security.

He proposed a “Made in Europe” strategy requiring minimum European-made content in goods, though it has raised concerns among Germany, Italy, and Nordic countries, the DW has reported.

Macron emphasized that the approach is “protection, not protectionism,” aimed at strengthening Europe’s strategic and economic independence.
