Father of activist Anna Kwok convicted under Hong Kong national security law

A Hong Kong court found Kwok Yin-sang, father of wanted activist Anna Kwok, guilty of violating national security law by attempting to withdraw funds from her insurance policy.

Anna Kwok, a Washington-based pro-democracy campaigner, is wanted by Hong Kong authorities for allegedly colluding with foreign forces, with a HK$1 million bounty on her arrest.

Kwok Yin-sang and his son were charged under Article 23, marking the first prosecution of a relative for handling a fugitive’s financial assets; he faces up to seven years in prison.

Rights groups criticized the conviction as “cruel and vindictive,” highlighting Hong Kong authorities’ increasing targeting of activists’ families, similar to mainland China tactics, The Guardian has reported.

The case comes amid broader crackdowns on dissent in Hong Kong, including the recent 20-year sentence of media mogul Jimmy Lai under national security laws.
