Orbán’s top opponent says Hungary’s alleged Russian backchannel ‘treason’ to be investigated

Hungary’s election frontrunner Péter Magyar accused the government of Viktor Orbán of possible “treason” after reports that officials shared sensitive EU discussions with Russia.

He specifically alleged that Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó maintained backchannel communications with Sergei Lavrov during EU meetings.

The claims, if true, suggest Moscow had insight into internal EU deliberations, raising serious concerns among European leaders.

Orbán denied wrongdoing and instead called for an investigation into alleged surveillance of his foreign minister, The Hill has reported.

The controversy comes just weeks before elections, with Hungary’s relationship with the EU already strained over its stance on Russia and Ukraine.
