Israel’s Knesset passed a bipartisan law to create a special military tribunal for roughly 300 Palestinian attackers captured during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led invasion, with the vote passing 93-0.
The tribunal would prosecute suspects for crimes including genocide, terrorism, harming Israeli sovereignty, and assisting an enemy during wartime, with genocide convictions carrying the possibility of the death penalty.
Supporters described the legislation as a historic step toward justice for the victims, hostages, and families affected by the attack, which killed around 1,200 people and saw 251 taken hostage.
The law also bars anyone accused or convicted of October 7 crimes from being released in future prisoner exchange deals, the Times of Israel has reported.
However, implementation may be delayed because Israel’s defense and finance ministries disagree over the tribunal’s projected cost, estimated between NIS 2 billion and NIS 5 billion.
