U.S. President Donald Trump defended a newly signed U.S.–Iran agreement, claiming it reflects “unconditional surrender” by Iran and asserting he has essentially unlimited power in foreign policy decisions.
The deal, reached after months of conflict that disrupted the Strait of Hormuz and global energy markets, includes a 60-day negotiating window for a final agreement and steps to reopen maritime traffic.
Trump said the agreement was meant to prevent a broader global economic crisis, while shipping through the strait has already begun to recover.
The deal has faced strong criticism from lawmakers who argue it gives Iran too many concessions and leaves it with strategic leverage, particularly over the vital shipping route, CNBC has reported.
Despite the backlash, Trump defended the outcome, saying continued conflict risked triggering a worldwide depression.
