Punxsutawney Phil, Pennsylvania’s “official state meteorologist,” saw his shadow Monday, predicting six more weeks of winter.
Thousands gathered at Gobbler’s Knob for the 140th Groundhog Day celebration to witness the famous groundhog’s annual emergence.
AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Pastelok said the eastern U.S. will continue to experience below-average temperatures and possible snow and ice in the coming week.
Despite Phil’s prediction, the National Centers for Environmental Information found the groundhog has only been accurate about 40% of the time over the past decade, Fox News has reported.
Several political figures, including U.S. Senator Dave McCormick and state leaders, attended the event, which remains a cherished tradition in Pennsylvania.
