Man shot by ICE in California charged with assaulting an officer with his car

Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez has been charged with assault on a federal officer with a deadly weapon after a shooting during an immigration enforcement stop in Northern California.

According to a criminal complaint from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, agents from ICE and Customs and Border Protection attempted to arrest him for immigration violations when he refused to exit his vehicle.

The complaint alleges he moved his car in a way that struck an agent, prompting federal officers to open fire.

Mendoza Hernandez was seriously wounded, underwent multiple surgeries, and was later arrested by the FBI after being released from the hospital, NBC News has reported.

His attorney disputes the federal account, arguing that video evidence and witnesses show agents fired first and that his client acted in response.
