Switzerland-France feud erupts over G7 security costs

Swiss authorities have expressed frustration over having to cover the major security costs for protests linked to the G7 summit taking place just across the border in France.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators have gathered in Switzerland, prompting a large police and military deployment, while France has declined to contribute financially to the estimated €21.7–€27.2 million security bill.

Swiss officials said they are trying to prevent unrest from escalating, especially after clashes between police and hundreds of protesters led to a ban on demonstrations.

Some Swiss politicians have suggested financial retaliation measures against France, but officials say treaty obligations make that difficult, Politico has reported.

The dispute comes as the G7 leaders meet in Évian-les-Bains to discuss issues including global trade and the war in Ukraine.
