President Trump defended a new U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding after Republican lawmakers sharply criticized it, calling opponents “fools” and arguing the deal improves markets and lowers oil prices.
Several GOP senators, including Bill Cassidy, Ted Cruz, and John Cornyn, warned that the agreement could strengthen Iran by easing sanctions and providing funds they say could support terrorist groups.
Critics focused on concerns about a potential $300 billion reconstruction fund and increased Iranian oil revenue, which they argue could finance groups like Hezbollah and Hamas.
Some Republicans, including Lindsey Graham, offered cautious support, saying the deal could reduce hostilities and improve economic stability, while others demanded more details and briefings, CBS News has reported.
Democrats also strongly opposed the agreement, with leaders like Chuck Schumer and Richard Blumenthal calling it a major strategic setback for the United States and a benefit to Iran.
