Sen. Elissa Slotkin and several Democratic senators plan to introduce the “Protect Our Polls Act,” which would ban presidents from sending armed military or federal agents to polling places during elections.
They argue the measure is needed to prevent voter intimidation and reinforce existing legal protections that already largely restrict such deployments except in cases of armed threats.
The bill follows President Trump’s suggestion of expanding federal involvement in elections, including ideas to “nationalize” voting systems, which prompted bipartisan concern among state and federal officials.
The White House defended Trump’s position by pointing to a separate Republican-backed election reform proposal that would require voter ID nationwide, NBC News has reported.
The debate reflects broader tensions over election security and federal authority, especially after disputes surrounding the 2020 election and concerns about military involvement in domestic political processes.
