Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine says the White House has underestimated how President Donald Trump’s trade war with Canada is hurting her state.

Collins said she has raised her concerns directly with Vice President JD Vance and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, but has not spoken with Trump himself.

She warned that tariffs could significantly hurt Maine families, small manufacturers and agricultural businesses that depend heavily on trade with Canada.

Maine has particularly close economic ties with Canada, with about 40% of its exports going there and nearly 70% of its imports coming from Canada in 2025, Politico has reported.

Collins is facing a difficult reelection campaign, making the escalating trade dispute an especially challenging political issue as she tries to balance support for Trump with concerns from Maine voters and businesses.
