New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced criticism from President Trump and Republican leaders after saying the city was exploring legal options to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits.

Mamdani cited an International Criminal Court warrant accusing Netanyahu of war crimes and said his administration would follow applicable laws.

Trump and other Republicans argued Netanyahu would not be arrested in the U.S., citing diplomatic protections and the country’s lack of recognition of the ICC.

Netanyahu’s office criticized Mamdani, saying he should focus on local issues instead of foreign policy, USA Today has reported.

The dispute has intensified debate over the limits of local authority, U.S. foreign policy, and international legal decisions.
