Austria has officially opened Adolf Hitler’s birthplace in Braunau am Inn as a police station to prevent it from becoming a gathering place for Nazi sympathizers.

The building was extensively renovated at a cost of about €20 million, while a memorial stone outside remains to honor the victims of fascism and the Holocaust.

Austrian officials said the project reflects the country’s commitment to confronting its Nazi past and promoting democracy.

The government chose to repurpose the building rather than demolish it or turn it into a museum, despite criticism that it lacks historical context, the AP has reported.

The move follows years of efforts to stop far-right extremists from using the site to honor Hitler.
