A 2,100-year-old Roman shipwreck carrying about 500 ancient amphorae has been discovered three miles off the coast of Sicily.

The vessel was found about 151 feet underwater near Mazara del Vallo after fishers alerted Italy’s Carabinieri cultural heritage protection squad.

Most of the cargo consisted of Dressel 1A amphorae, which were commonly used to transport wine and can help archaeologists trace ancient Mediterranean trade routes.

Italian officials called the discovery one of the most important underwater archaeological finds in recent years and plan further research to determine the ship’s exact age and cargo origins, The Guardian has reported.

The wreck adds to a growing number of significant Roman shipwrecks discovered in Italian waters, highlighting Sicily’s importance as a center of ancient Mediterranean trade.
