A deep partial lunar eclipse will be visible across Canada on the night of Aug. 27-28, with the Moon reaching 93% coverage at its peak.

The eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through Earth’s shadow, known as the umbra, after moving through the dimmer outer penumbra.

Most of Canada will be able to see the entire eclipse, while parts of Western Canada will see it already underway as the Moon rises.

Unlike a solar eclipse, the lunar eclipse can be viewed safely with the naked eye without protective eyewear, CBC has reported.

The event will also last for several hours, giving viewers much more time to observe it than the few minutes typically associated with a solar eclipse.
