A U.S. military judge has scheduled the long-delayed trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11 attacks, for June 5, 2028. 

Mohammed will stand trial alongside three alleged accomplices who are also being held at the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The case has been delayed for more than two decades because of extensive legal disputes, including arguments over what evidence can be used at trial.

A previous plea agreement that would have spared Mohammed and two co-defendants the possibility of the death penalty was overturned after significant political opposition, CBS News has reported.

The 2028 trial date could still be pushed back if the court fails to resolve the remaining pretrial issues and meet its deadlines.
