UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham used his first speech in the House of Commons to promise optimism and “substantial change” for the country.

He blamed decades of political and economic decisions, including Margaret Thatcher’s policies and Brexit, for contributing to low growth, inequality and declining living standards.

Burnham said his government would focus on lowering everyday costs, revitalizing struggling communities and giving local areas more control over their futures.

He also pledged greater public control of essential services such as water, energy and housing while supporting increased regional devolution, The Guardian has reported.

Burnham’s vision drew criticism from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who accused him of promoting outdated economic policies, while Burnham defended his plans as a necessary break from the past.
