Astronomers have discovered a massive, mysterious 10-sided atmospheric structure, known as a decagon, surrounding Saturn’s south pole.
The feature was identified using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, with observations showing that it began emerging by at least 2023 and has become more pronounced over time.
The decagon sits within one of Saturn’s powerful jet streams and extends through multiple layers of the planet’s atmosphere.
Scientists say it resembles Saturn’s famous six-sided storm at the north pole, but the southern structure is different and appears to be moving eastward, Space.com has reported.
Researchers are still unsure what caused the decagon to form and plan to continue monitoring it to determine how long it will last and what it can reveal about Saturn’s atmospheric dynamics.
