Chinese President Xi Jinping called for greater cooperation with the United States during a meeting with President Donald Trump, saying the two countries should avoid the “Thucydides trap” and the risk of military conflict.

Xi urged stronger communication, mutual trust and regular military dialogue, while saying cooperation could benefit both countries despite their differences.

Trump said the two leaders had developed a strong relationship and that their discussions would include trade, security, technology and artificial intelligence.

The meeting comes amid continuing tensions over tariffs, trade, Taiwan and competition over AI technology, including U.S. restrictions on semiconductor exports to China, The Guardian has reported.

Both leaders adopted a cooperative tone, although analysts remain skeptical that lasting agreements can be reached on the many issues dividing the two countries.
