Andy Burnham has pledged that Labour will campaign in the next general election on changing the UK’s voting system.

He announced plans for a national commission to examine electoral reform and invited other political parties to participate.

Burnham has previously backed proportional representation, arguing that the current first-past-the-post system does not adequately reflect the fragmented political landscape.

The issue has gained attention after Labour won a large parliamentary majority in 2024 despite receiving 34% of the vote, the BBC has reported.

Burnham said electoral reform was needed to ensure votes and political voices were better represented and to address concerns about political instability.
