Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has applied to trademark her voice with the European Union Intellectual Property Office as a way to strengthen legal protections against AI-generated deepfakes.
The application, filed Oct. 5, includes a four-second recording of Meloni saying “Io sono Giorgia Meloni,” echoing a phrase from her well-known 2019 political speech and her 2021 autobiography.
Meloni has previously been targeted by manipulated images and videos, including sexually explicit deepfakes, and has warned that such technology can deceive and harm people.
If approved, the trademark could give Meloni an additional legal tool against unauthorized commercial uses of her voice, although it would not automatically prevent all AI-generated imitations, Politico has reported.
Her move reflects a growing effort by public figures and entertainers to establish legal protections for their voices and likenesses as increasingly convincing AI-generated content spreads online.
