A California couple with 27 children has been arrested and charged with allegedly abusing 15 of them, including a child who was just 2 months old.
Prosecutors accuse Guojun Xuan, 66, and Silvia Shasha Zhang, 39, of directing nannies to beat the children with shoes and wooden sticks, sometimes while the couple watched.
The alleged abuse occurred at the couple’s large mansion in Arcadia, and the investigation began after a 2-month-old child was hospitalized with head injuries in 2025.
The couple, former owners of a surrogacy company that was shut down last year, pleaded not guilty and denied the allegations, while their attorney said Xuan is being unfairly scrutinized, UPI has reported.
A judge ordered the couple to surrender their passports, remain under electronic home monitoring and have limited contact with their children, with bail set at $20 million each.
