Trump calls for leadership change in Ukraine in rebuke to Zelensky

President Donald Trump called for Ukraine to choose a new president, arguing that Volodymyr Zelenskyy should be replaced by a leader willing to negotiate an agreement to end the war with Russia.

Speaking to reporters on October 10, Trump blamed Zelenskyy for contributing to rising global energy prices and prolonging the conflict.

The war escalated in February 2022 when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and Russia continues to occupy roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory.

Trump’s criticism came one day after he announced an agreement with Putin allowing Russian diesel fuel to enter the U.S. market in an effort to reduce energy prices ahead of November’s midterm elections, the USA Today has reported.

The arrangement has drawn concern because it could provide economic relief to Russia as it continues its war against Ukraine, while Trump presses Kyiv to reach a negotiated settlement.
