
According to authorities in the New York metropolitan area, five kids were killed an another was injured after their vehicle veered off a road and crashed into a tree in the early morning hours on Sunday.
Those killed ranged in age from 8 to 17, according to a release from the Westchester County Police Department. Four boys and a girl, all from Connecticut, died, the release said, CNN reported.
According to the press release, a sixteen-year-old boy appears to have been the driver of the Nissan Rouge. The SUV was driving on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Scarsdale, New York which is located about 25 miles northeast of New York City, when it went off of the road and struck a tree and caught fire.
The only survivor was a 9-year-old boy, who apparently was in the car’s hatchback area and escaped from the rear of the car, according to Westchester County officials, as reported by CNN.
Westchester County authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of the crash and law enforcement officers were working Sunday to notify the families of the children killed.
