Two soldiers with the Mexican military and five cartel gunmen were killed Friday after the military unit was ambushed in southwest Mexico, Fox News is reporting.
The Mexican military said in a statement that the unit “was the target of an attack by approximately 18 armed civilians aboard two vehicles,” on Friday.
In the town of El Pescado, located in a mountainous area of the state of Guerrero in southern Mexico, the shootout took place similar to other clashes between Mexican officials and cartel members that have taken place in the area.
Local Mexican officials claim the attack was most likely carried out by members of the La Familia Michoacana drug cartel, which was a once powerful cartel that has been recently attempting to regain its influence in the area after the arrest of some of its leaders.
