According to three sources familiar with the matter, federal prosecutors have brought criminal charges against Republican Representative George Santos of New York.

Santos, known for his astonishing pattern of lies and fabrications that left even seasoned politicos stunned, is expected to appear in federal court in New York’s eastern district, possibly as early as Wednesday.

The charges have been filed under seal, and the specific nature of the charges remains undisclosed at this time, CNN reported.

The FBI, along with public integrity prosecutors from the Justice Department in New York and Washington, have been investigating allegations of false statements in Santos’ campaign finance filings and other claims.

Santos’ attorney declined to provide any comment, while spokespersons for the Brooklyn US Attorney’s Office, the Justice Department, and the FBI also refrained from commenting on the matter.

Since his election last year to represent a district encompassing parts of Long Island and Queens, the freshman congressman has faced investigations from multiple jurisdictions as well as scrutiny from the House Ethics Committee.

Allegations against Santos have ranged from criminal misconduct during his campaign to a pattern of personal dishonesty that extends back over a decade.

Calls for Santos’ resignation have come from prominent Democrats and some New York Republicans alike.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy stated that he would review the charges before deciding whether he believes Santos should be removed from Congress.

When asked about the situation on Tuesday, the California Republican told CNN, “I’ll look at the charges.”
