
Officials have confirmed that a fire at the Marathon Galveston Bay refinery in Texas City resulted in one fatality, while two contract workers were taken to the hospital with injuries, according to Marathon.
The fire broke out in a unit around 9:30 on Monday morning and was brought under control within a few hours, as reported by city officials.
Fortunately, there was no need for a shelter-in-place order, and the fire did not pose a threat to the surrounding community, KHOU 11 reported.
Initially, all employees and contractors were reported to be safe, but a subsequent statement revealed the unfortunate passing of an employee as a result of the fire.
The identity of the deceased employee has not yet been disclosed. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
Plant operations appeared to resume normally as of Monday evening, and Texas City officials assured that they are closely monitoring the air quality in the vicinity.
