According to Russia, its military and security forces are currently engaged in combat against Ukrainian units that crossed into the southern Belgorod region, marking the largest incursion into Russian territory since the beginning of the war.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin received a briefing from the military and security services regarding the situation, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Peskov further explained that the purpose of this incident was to divert attention away from the situation in the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, which Moscow claimed to have fully seized over the weekend.

As per Russian state news agency TASS, Peskov mentioned that efforts are underway to expel and eliminate the commando team from Russian territory.

He emphasized that there are sufficient forces and resources deployed for this operation.
