3-year-old fatally stabbed, mother injured in random attack outside Ohio grocery store

A 3-year-old child was fatally stabbed and his mother injured in a random attack outside a grocery store in North Olmsted, Ohio.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Monday in the parking lot of a Giant Eagle, 20 miles southwest of Cleveland.

The suspect, Bionca Ellis, 32, from Cleveland, allegedly obtained a butcher knife from a nearby thrift store before following Margot Wood and her son from the grocery store to the parking lot, where she attacked them.

The child was fatally stabbed in the face and back, while the mother sustained a shoulder injury.

Authorities attempted life-saving measures, but the child succumbed to his injuries, NBC News reported.

Ellis was arrested on a charge of aggravated murder and was found with the knife in her possession.

Police indicated the attack appeared random, with no prior altercation or connection between Ellis and the victims.

Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones expressed deep sadness over the incident.

Ellis had a previous arrest for petty theft and a non-violent crime but had no known violent history. It is unclear if she has legal representation.
