Quirky ground-effect ‘seaglider’ approved for full-scale flight tests

Later this year, residents of Rhode Island might witness the first manned flights of the Viceroy seaglider, an electric aircraft by Regent that uses wing-in-ground effect to enhance range.

This battery-powered passenger vehicle combines elements of a seaplane, hydrofoil, and ground-effect aircraft.

It aims to offer a green and cost-effective transportation solution for coastal and island communities.

The Viceroy is expected to travel up to 180 miles on a single charge, with a top speed of 180 mph, and potentially reach a 500-mile range in the future.

Regent has received approval from the U.S. Coast Guard to test the full-size seaglider in Rhode Island, New Atlas has reported.

The company is also planning to build a manufacturing plant in Rhode Island and hopes to deliver up to 12 seagliders annually.
