A woman was shot and killed by Omaha Police Department after she allegedly abducted a young boy from a shopper inside a Walmart in Omaha and attacked him with a knife.

Police say the suspect had stolen a knife in the store, forced a woman to walk with her at knifepoint, and then left the building with the child.

After officers arrived and issued commands, she allegedly slashed the boy in the face while holding him in a shopping cart, prompting an officer to open fire.

The child survived but suffered serious facial and hand injuries and is expected to recover, CBS News has reported.

Authorities are investigating the incident, which they describe as isolated, with help from state and county agencies.
