Global leftist leaders gather in Spain to mobilize against right-wing politicians

Progressive leaders from more than 100 organizations are meeting in Barcelona, Spain, to coordinate a global response to the rise of far-right and nationalist movements.

The “Global Progressive Mobilization” initiative, backed by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, aims to strengthen cooperation among left-leaning parties worldwide.

Participants include prominent leaders such as Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, and Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum.

Organizers say democracy is under growing pressure and argue that a coordinated international effort is needed to counter authoritarian trends, Politico has reported.

The gathering also highlights Sánchez’s rising international profile, with some viewing him as a potential future contender for a major EU leadership role.
