FBI raids office of Dem state lawmaker in Virginia

The FBI executed a court-authorized search at the Portsmouth office of Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas, saying it was conducting an ongoing investigation but not disclosing details or targets.

Federal agents confirmed the search but said there is no threat to public safety, while local police reported they were not previously aware of the operation.

Lucas, the state Senate president pro tem, suggested the raid was politically motivated and linked it to her role in Virginia’s recent congressional redistricting effort.

She accused federal authorities of attempting to intimidate her, while Republicans and Democrats have clashed over the politically charged redistricting process, Politico has reported.

State House Speaker Don Scott urged caution, saying too little information was available to draw conclusions about the investigation.
