Rubio calls GOP criticisms of Iran-Trump emerging deal ‘absurd’

Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed Republican criticism of a potential Iran deal as “absurd,” saying the U.S. prefers diplomacy but will not accept an agreement that strengthens Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

His comments came after President Donald Trump said a deal with Iran was “largely negotiated,” including reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Several Republican lawmakers, including Senators Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz, voiced concern that the agreement could weaken U.S. leverage and empower Iran.

Critics argued that Iran could gain financial and strategic advantages while maintaining its nuclear ambitions, The Hill has reported.

Despite the controversy, Rubio said negotiations are making progress but stressed any deal must be properly implemented.
