California Governor Gavin Newsom accused President Donald Trump of directing the Justice Department to launch a “politically motivated” investigation into him and his wife.
Newsom said no crime has been identified and claimed the probe is aimed at him because he may be considering a future presidential run.
He also criticized what he described as efforts to involve his family, calling it a “personal vendetta” and urging Trump to leave his wife and children out of the matter.
His office said the inquiry appears to have expanded into personal and professional areas involving his family and network, though specific allegations have not been disclosed, the DW has reported.
The Justice Department has not commented publicly on the investigation, which reportedly began expanding in 2025.
