Three die in Mexico City World Cup celebrations

Three people, including a 19-year-old woman, died from suffocation during massive World Cup celebrations in Mexico City after Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador.

More than one million fans gathered around the Angel of Independence monument to celebrate the country’s first World Cup knockout win since 1986.

Emergency responders treated the victims at different locations before they were taken to hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged the public to celebrate responsibly, the BBC has reported.

The victory advanced Mexico to the World Cup round of 16.
