A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Peru’s Andes region near Sicaya, killing at least five people, injuring more than 20, and displacing around 300 residents.

The quake occurred Saturday night at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Several buildings, including a church and convent, collapsed or suffered major structural damage, while the number of missing people remains unknown.

Rescue efforts are ongoing in the hardest-hit communities, where families remain outside damaged homes, NBC News has reported.

Peru frequently experiences earthquakes because it lies along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.
