An aging ferry carrying 133 people capsized off the coast of Guyana, leaving 67 people rescued while search crews continue looking for 66 others listed as missing.

Officials believe the vessel overturned after being struck by a large wave during its overnight journey from Georgetown to Port Kaituma.

The rescued included adults and children, while the captain and crew returned to assist with rescue efforts.

The ferry, built in 1939, was equipped with life jackets, lifeboats, and inflatable rafts, but many passengers remained unaccounted for, AFP has reported.

The tragedy has deeply affected the nation as government and private vessels continue searching for survivors.
