Astronomers have found the strongest evidence yet that a rocky planet outside our solar system may have retained an atmosphere.

The planet, LHS 1140 b, is the first rocky world in a star’s habitable zone where scientists have detected signs of an atmosphere, a key factor for possible life.

Located about 48 light-years away, the super-Earth is larger than Earth and orbits a small red dwarf star.

Researchers say the discovery could help improve the search for habitable planets beyond our solar system, Live Science has reported.

Although LHS 1140 b is cold, its conditions may allow for liquid water if its atmosphere provides enough warming.
