A meteorite that crashed into a New Jersey home in 2024 has been identified as one of the most scientifically valuable meteorites ever recovered.

Researchers found that the Hillsborough meteorite contains amino acids, carbon-based compounds, and other building blocks linked to the origins of life.

The meteorite was preserved quickly by the homeowner, allowing scientists to study it in nearly untouched condition.

Classified as a rare CM1/2 carbonaceous chondrite, the rock came from a primitive asteroid that had interacted with salty fluids in space, ABC News has reported.

Scientists say the discovery offers new clues about how early solar system materials may have helped provide the ingredients for life on Earth.
