A 73-year-old woman, Rachell Summers of Capitola, California, was fatally stabbed near a mall food court in what police described as a random act of violence.

Officers responded to the Capitola Mall on July 20 and attempted life-saving measures, but Summers was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect, 19-year-old Tyler Leibelt of Santa Cruz, was arrested about a half-mile away and is not believed to have known the victim.

The mall was temporarily closed while investigators processed evidence and continued their investigation with the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office, KTLA 5 has reported.

Authorities are asking witnesses with photos, videos, or other information to assist in the ongoing case.
