SpaceX launched a groundbreaking satellite-servicing mission called MRV-MEV on July 21 from Cape Canaveral, carrying a robotic servicing vehicle and three Mission Extension Pods to geostationary orbit.
The mission, operated by Northrop Grumman’s SpaceLogistics subsidiary, aims to extend the lives of aging satellites by attaching propulsion and support systems that can add up to eight years of service.
The robotic vehicle will use advanced arms to install the pods for satellite operators including Optus and Intelsat.
The spacecraft will also be capable of inspecting, repairing, upgrading, and eventually refueling satellites in orbit, Space.com has reported.
The Falcon 9 launch was successful, though the booster was not recovered because the mission required extra performance to reach its destination.
