Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), was removed from office after member states voted that he committed serious misconduct related to sexual misconduct allegations, which he denies.

His removal comes as the ICC faces mounting pressure from the United States, which has launched a campaign to weaken the court through sanctions and diplomatic efforts.

Khan’s lawyers argue he was denied a fair process and plan to challenge the decision.

The ICC will now elect a new prosecutor, who could also face U.S. sanctions over the court’s investigations into Israel and U.S. actions abroad, the AP has reported.

Despite Khan’s departure, existing ICC arrest warrants, including those for Israeli officials, remain unchanged.
