The Akawa Butte Fire near Sisters, Oregon, has become the nation’s top firefighting priority after burning more than 27,000 acres.

The lightning-caused wildfire has destroyed homes, forced evacuations, and shown extreme behavior with intense flames and dangerous weather conditions.

Governor Tina Kotek visited the area and said crews are working to protect the nearby community of Sisters as strong winds and dry conditions continue.

More than 1,100 firefighters are battling the blaze, with support from multiple states and international crews expected, KGW8 has reported.

Federal assistance has been approved to help cover firefighting costs as Oregon faces one of its most severe wildfire seasons.
