Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes resigned Thursday amid criticism over the city’s delayed communication following a deadly shooting at the Bite of Seattle festival.

The shooting left three people dead, including a suspect, and injured four others, including a 2-year-old child.

Mayor Katie Wilson appointed Deputy Chief Andre Sayles as interim chief while thanking Barnes for his service.

Supporters of Barnes argued he was being unfairly blamed and praised his efforts to improve community relations and reduce violence, the AP has reported.

The city continues to investigate the festival shooting and search for additional suspects as officials prepare for upcoming large events.
