A total solar eclipse will occur over mainland Spain for the first time in more than a century on Aug. 12, creating a rare celestial event.

The eclipse will bring daytime darkness as the moon passes between the sun and Earth, with totality lasting up to two minutes and 18 seconds.

The eclipse path will cross parts of the Atlantic, Greenland, Iceland, Portugal, and Spain before ending in the Mediterranean.

A larger eclipse lasting more than six minutes is expected the following year, extending across Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East, the AP has reported.

Millions of people across Europe, North America, and Africa will also be able to see a partial eclipse.
